With the Because the Internet chapter coming to an end, Childish Gambino’s Stnmtn/Kauai project has been set lose.
After Childish Gambino released his sophomore album Because the Internet last December, it was clear that the relationship between Donald and Glassnote Records was a bit off. Now ten months after the release Childish Gambino has gone on an impressive run to secure himself as one of the hottest artists out in hip-hop. With full creative control over the project, one day after the conclusion of “The Deep Web Tour” Childish Gambino has turned the page.
The two part project, Stnmtn/Kauai, is a creative blend of a mixtape and an EP. The Gangsta Grillz series sponsored “Stnmtn” is a return to Gambino’s hometown of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Childish Gambino takes us through a journey of Atlanta hip-hop, trap-hop, trap, everything ATL. Production is a huge emphasis throughout the tape, I mean it is DJ Drama were talking about here. A handful of new producers collaborating with Childish Gambino and all of the ROYALTY fam results in some great Atlanta sounds with the creative spins you’d expect from the crew. The remix to Steve G. Lover’s “Ass Shots” is special in many ways.
Kauai leads off with the final cut of the previously released “Sober” which gives the listener a beautifully stark contrast which shows the unmatchable versatility Gambino has put into the project. Childish Gambino has been polishing his singing voice for years now and seeing the growth and progress that has lead to the culmination of Kauai is AMAZING. Stnmtn/Kauai is an amazing project which shows the full creative capacity of Childish Gambino as an artist.
Check out the final behind the scenes look of “The Deep Web Tour” as it blossoms into Stnmtn/Kauai. Kauai will be available for download off iTunes “soon” as all the proceeds will be going to charities for Kauai and police officer body cameras respectively. Stream the EP for free below!
