It’s very likely you’ve heard O.T. Genasis’ thumping bass-heavy ode to cocaine at some point in the month since it’s release, or at least one of the slew of remixes, but GNASH’s Coco rework might just be my favorite yet. GNASH exchanges the bombastic trap flavored production of the original for a sparse, melodic, soundscape populated by stuttering drums and somber keys.
Over this he croons sweetly, completing the metamorphosis of the track, from a manic trap anthem, into a mellifluous R&B slow jam. Garrett’s honeyed vocals create a beautiful contrast when paired with the grittier lyrical content, and what you end up with is genius.
Although GNASH is mainly known for his role as producer and DJ, I hope we hear more from him as an artist in his own right. If Coco is any indication, he has a bright future ahead.
If you like what you hear, be sure to head to GNASH’s SoundCloud, and check out his work as part of the duo BEND.
