Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Live in NYC

After seeing Macklemore & Ryan Lewis live on The Heist tour(s) three times a few years ago, I had high expectations as I entered the Hammerstein Ballroom last night in New York City.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ sophomore album This Unruly Mess I’ve Made received mixed reviews, including praise from fans but a lack of sales and radio play compared to the duo’s 2012 effort. With less of a mainstream appeal than The Heist, Macklemore made a statement with this album, and the live performance which accompanied it.

Mixing his classic with the new material, Macklemore did a great job of mixing up his setlist. Though the crowd wasn’t nearly reactive to TUMIM as it was to The Heist, I personally thought the newer songs were perfect for the live environment. Most of the new tracks are full of energy, and though they might lack the commercial appeal of Thrift Shop, many of them have comedic attributes, much like the now certified-Diamond (holy fuck) single.

The personal connection Macklemore makes with the audience is always spectacular. After attending the show, you feel closer to him not as a fan, but as a person. Not to mention, during this stop of the tour, he managed to throw a cookie onto the 3rd floor balcony after performing Let’s Eat. Very impressive. Read more and check out the full setlist after the jump!
